Installation Instructions: General Probe Wiring

All Hydro-Eye Monitor probes need approximately 6 volts to operate. Thus on a standard 6 volt battery like an L-16 or T-105 the probe is inserted into the acid in the center cell and the black wire is connected to the battery negative terminal and the red wire to the battery positive terminal.

On an industrial battery with lead straps connecting the cells in series, the Monitor probe is inserted into the acid in a center cell and the black wire is connected to the outboard strap on the adjacent cell towards the battery negative post. The red wire is connected to the outboard strap of the cell on the opposite side. Thus there is approximately 6 volts between the wires.

On an 8D battery the red and black wires connect directly to the battery terminals. A voltage regulator in the probe permits 12 VDC operation.

On a Group24 or Group27 battery the probe is inserted into the middle cell of the cover next to the battery negative post and the short black wire connected to the negative post and the longer red wire connected to the positive post. A 1/8" diameter hole must be drilled through the cell cover for the probe.

All Hydro-Eye Alert, Alarm and Combo probes also require 6 volts to operate. On an industrial battery the black wire is connected to the outboard strap on the cell adjacent to the cell being probed in the direction of the battery negative terminal and the red wire from the probe connected to the outboard strap of the cell on the opposite side. Thus there is 6 vdc between the red and the black wires with the probe in the middle. On a standard 6 volt battery the red and black leads connect to the battery terminals with the probe in the center cell.

The G24 and G27 Marine batteries are all 12 volts and there are no inter-cell straps to connect to so Hydro-Eye includes a voltage regulator into the Alert, Alarm and Combo probes for these batteries which will allow 12 volt operation.
